Year Round Socks and Its Little Sister, Every Season Socks

I've knit these socks more times than I can count. Mostly from yarn with a gauge of about 200m/100g. So cozy to wear indoors or in shoes — nothing beats pulling these on when you come in from the cold. These are the socks I actually wear out.

Siis Ympäri vuoden -sukat (Year Round Socks / Ympäri vuoden sukat) ovat nimensä veroiset, niitä pidetään ympäri vuoden ja ne on helppo muokata käyttäjälleen sopiviksi. Värivalinta on jokaisen oma ja olen aikanaan tehnyt vähän erilaisia varsia sukkiin, mutta pääidea on aina ollut sama. Päädyin näissä tällaiseen hyvin klassiseen ja ajattomaan kuvioon, jota näkee monissa sukissa ja lapasissa vähän eri variaatioina eikä se yksinään ole kovin uniikki ainakaan täällä meillä pohjoisessa. Year Round Socks (Year Round Socks / Ympäri vuoden sukat) live up to their name — they're worn all year round and are easy to adjust to fit the wearer. The color choice is up to you, and over the years I've made a few different leg variations, but the main idea has always stayed the same. I ended up with a classic, timeless pattern that you see in many socks and mittens in slightly different variations, and on its own it's not especially unique, at least not here in the north. Somehow it still felt natural that this was the first pattern I wrote when I started designing. This has been one of my most sold pattern as well. But...

Kun tein ohjeen niin huomasin hyvin pian, että maailman neulemarkkinat eivät käytä tätä paksumpaa, lähes Aran-vahvuista lankaa (n. 200-230m/100g) juurikaan, eikä näille ollut niin paljon kysyntää. Once I finished the pattern, I quickly noticed that most of the knitting world doesn't really use this heavier, almost Aran-weight yarn (roughly 200-230m/100g) — so there wasn't much demand for it. I was a bit disappointed, since I'd put quite a lot of work into it and already started the process. So I decided to make a version in DK weight, which is more widely used around the world. But...

Kun aloin muokkaamaan ohjetta ohuemmalle langalle niin kierrosmäärät, tiheys, toistot varrenkuvioissa olivat eri — tiheys muuttui noin 24 silmukasta 26 silmukkaan (10cm) DK-langalla, ja puikkokokokin muuttui 3,5 mm pienempään 3 mm. Samoin käy tietysti kantapäässä ja terässä. Kiilakavennukset tulevat ohuemmalla langalla eri tahtiin ja kuviota oli terässä aivan liian vähän kerroksiin nähden ja kärjen kavennuksiin piti lisätä kerroksia ja kavennuksia jne. Näin ollen niin moni asia muuttui että näitä olisi enää sanonut samaksi sukaksi ja ainakin neulojan näkökulmasta ohje olisi ollut äärettömän sekava - kaksi eri ohjetta oikeasti. Joten syntyi Ympäri vuoden -sukkien pikkusisko sukka, Joka kauden -sukat (Joka kauden sukat). Joka kauden -sukat tuntuvat jalassa erilaisilta, koska ovat ohuemmat ja oikeastaan olen alkanut itsekin tykästymään niihin koko ajan enemmän. Uusimmat Joka kauden -sukat tein itselleni musta-harmaina - tykkään! Mutta...

When I started adapting the pattern for a thinner yarn, the round counts, gauge, and repeats in the leg pattern all came out different — the gauge went from about 24 stitches to 26 stitches per 10cm to a noticeably tighter count with DK yarn, and the needle size changed from 3,5 mm EU to 3 mm EU. The same was true for the heel and toe round and stitch counts. The gusset decreases needed adjusting to every other round, and the color pattern looked too chopped up on the foor, which now had more rows and needed something extra - so, I made it longer. Then the toe decreases needed to be adjusted, and so on. So many things changed that, at least from a knitter's point of view, you couldn't really call it the same sock anymore or the written pattern would have been really hard to follow— and that's how Year Round Socks' little sister, Every Season Socks (Nordic Every Season Socks), was born. Every Season Socks feel different on the foot, since they're thinner, and honestly I've grown fonder of them the more I wear them. My newest pair of Every Season Socks I made for myself in black and grey — I love them! But...

                                            

Julkaisin Vuoden Ympäri sukkien ohjeen Ravelryssä elokuussa 2025 ja Joka kauden sukkien ohjeen lokakuussa 2025. Koska olin lokakuussa jo aikalailla jouluneuleiden parissa, annoin tälle ohjeelle ensin nimen Joko on pian Joulu -sukat. Sukat olivat oikein oivat juuri tuohon aikaan, koska ne ovat selkeästi viikonlopussa neulottavat ja siksi soveltuvat kivasti vaikka joululahjoiksi. Minä jopa otin aikaa ja laskin, että minulla meni näiden neulomiseen 13 tuntia aikaa vaikka en ole kovin nopea neuloja - selkeästi joululahja-projektiksi sopiva ohje, joka valmistuu vielä lähellä H-hetkeäkin. Myöhemmin vaihdoin nimen, koska tällä malilla sukkia voi neuloa helposti jokaiselle kaudelle ja ohje toimii siis ympäri vuoden.

The Year Round Sock pattern was released in August 2025 and the Nordic Every Season socks were first released in late October 2025 and as I was already doing my Christmas knitting, I called the pattern It's Christmas soon socks as they were clearly a weekend project and great for gifting - I even timed my knitting, and it took me 13 hours to knit these socks. So it is most definitely a weekend knit and gift you get done even close to the gifting time. A great idea for a Christmas gift.  But later I changed the name for Every Season Socks as this pattern works well year round.

Kumpi on sinun juttu - paksummat vai ohuemmat? Lyhyemmällä varrella vai pidemmällä - sitäkin voi molemmissa malleissa muunnella kesäsukista talvisukkiin. Tummat vai vaaleat? Kirkkaat vai luonnonläheiset? Näkisin mielelläni mitä olet tällä mallilla tehnyt - käyttöön nämä sukat ovat aika varmasti päässeet - ovathan?

Which is more your thing — the thicker or the thinner version? Shorter leg or longer — that's something you can adjust in both patterns too, from summer socks to winter socks. Dark or light? Bright colors or more natural tones? I'd love to see what others have made with this pattern — these socks have pretty surely gotten some wear, haven't they?
