Nietos-sarja saa inspiraationsa pohjoisen talvesta: lumen pehmeistä kinoksista ja tavasta, jolla lumi asettuu kerroksittain tunturin rinteille. Tämä lapasmalli kaikuu tätä hiljaista, kerroksellista maisemaa kolmivärisessä kirjoneulekuviossa, joka on neulottu kolmella Lettlopi-langan sävyllä — vaalealla, keskivaalealla ja tummalla — virraten rannekkeesta sormenpäihin.

Nietos — drift of snow — takes its inspiration from the northern winter: the soft curves of snowdrifts, and the way snow settles in layers across the fells. This mitten pattern echoes that quiet, layered landscape in a two-colour Fair Isle motif, worked in three shades of Lettlopi — light, medium, and dark — running from cuff to fingertip like drifts of snow catching the light.

The pattern uses no long floats, making it a relatively easy and enjoyable knit even if stranded colourwork is still new to you. The same motif also appears on the matching Nietos socks and leg warmers, so you can knit a full set that carries the drift of snow with you all winter long. The men's version includes an additional motif at the fingertip.

 

Nämä lapaset on neulottu Islantilaisesta villasta Lettlopi-langalla. Lettlopi sopii lapasiin loistavasti, sillä käytössä tämä 100% villaneulos hieman huopuu ja pitää lämmön entistä paremmin. These mittens are knit from Icelandic Lettlopi wool. Lettlopi is wonderful for mittens, since in use this 100% wool knit felts slightly and keeps the heat in even better. Nietokset are made to warm your fingers even in harder frost — just layer two pairs of mittens, with these on top.

Mutta Lettlopi on vaikea korvattava. Vaikka saman vahvuisia lankoja on tarjolla pilvin pimein, ne eivät ole ihan samanlaisia neulottavia kuin Lettlopi. Lettlopi on todellakin tunnettu siitä, että se on hankala korvata täysin samanlaisella tuloksella, koska se on löyhästi kierretty, "unspun"-tyyppinen lanka, joka käyttäytyy neulottaessa eri tavalla kuin tiukemmin kehrätyt langat, ja se on tehty kahdesta kevyesti yhteen kierretystä säikeestä.

If Lettlopi absolutely had to be replaced, I'd try another 100% wool yarn. In the men's mittens, you can see how Novita Woolly Wool works, and it achieves the same gauge. With other yarns of the same weight, at least in my experience, the gauge tends to come out denser — so the finished size measurements likely won't hold true if you substitute the yarn. Of course, this also depends on the individual knitter.

But Lettlopi is genuinely hard to substitute. Plenty of yarns come in the same weight, but they don't knit up quite the same way — Lettlopi is unspun, made of two loosely twisted strands, which gives it a different look and feel than more tightly spun yarns. So checking your gauge with whatever yarn you choose is the most important step in this pattern.

If I absolutely had to replace Lettlopi, I'd reach for another 100% wool yarn. In the men's mittens, you can see how Novita Woolly Wool works — it hits the same gauge nicely. On the UK/US side, West Yorkshire Spinners Croft and Jamieson's of Shetland are both worth a look, since Shetland wool tends to be soft without losing that rustic, woolly character. With most other yarns of the same weight, though, my own gauge tends to come out denser — so the finished size measurements likely won't hold true if you substitute the yarn. Of course, this depends on the individual knitter, so always swatch first

Nietossukat ja -säärystimet saavat seurakseen Nietoslapaset kahdessa koossa. Lapasissa on samaa kuviota, mutta lankana Lettlopi. 

The drift of snow socks and leg warmers family is increasing with a mitten pattern in two sizes. The colour work is similar to the sock pattern, but Lettlopi yarn is used here.

Sinä voit tietysti valita omat värisi, sillä malli toimii useammalla yhdistelmällä, kunhan värien kontrasti eroaa tarpeeksi toisistaan. Lankavaihtoehtojakin on useita Lettlopin lisäksi mm. Drops Lima tai merino extra fine mix sopii ohjeeseen, Novita 7veljestä,  ym. Oikeastaan lähes mikä tahansa saman vahvuinen lanka (200m/100g), jolla saavutat saman tiheyden sopii tähän ohjeeseen. Erityisesti 100% villalangat ovat lapasissa lämpimiä.

You can of course choose your own colour combination as long as the three colours have contrast between them. For this pattern you can also use any other yarn of similar weight that gives you the same gauge. There are many choices e.g. Drops Lima or even merino extra fine, Novita 7brother and many more Aran/worsted weight yarn (n.200m/100g). 100% wool is a great and warm yarn choice for mittens.

This pattern is relatively easy knit. It doesn't have any long floats of yarn and as long as you remember yarn dominance while knitting, you will have a great result. The pattern is suited for a beginner with some knitting experience or for more experienced knitter as a relatively easy and fast gift knitting.

Värit voi tietysti valita itse ja mustavalkoisesta kuvasta näkee, että nämä olivat kauniin seesteiset sukkamallinkin väreillä. Jotenkin kevään ollessa ovella, on kuitenkin ihana lisätä hempeitä tulppaanien värejä neuleisiin.

Like with the sock pattern, you can choose the colour theme according to your favourite colours. This pattern would work nicely with the socks colour palet, but as it is already spring time I wanted to add a little sparkle of colour and chose light tulip pink for mine. What is your colour choice?
